Panagyaman Festival - pura

The Panagyaman Rice Festival was the principal national festival devoted to the triumphs of little agriculturists who have been the spine in the crusade for a Hungry-Free Philippines. April was decided for the recognition of the celebration on the grounds that the achievement of rice generation and gathering in April gives substance and importance to the merriments and holidays held the nation over in May and June. The celebration assembles the nearby people together to praise their rich collection of brilliant and enthusiastic souls. Different exercises are organized, including road moving, singing, a buoy parade, agro-modern and exchange fairs, and sportsfest.

“Panagyaman” is an ilocano word for thanksgiving. This festival is a grand celebration of giving thanks to all the Puranians for their relentless efforts and support to our town,” Mayor Concepcion Zarate said. The Municipality of Pura recently celebrated its 8th Panagyaman Festival through various activities that promote and highlight its tradition and culture.

Long before the foundation of the Panagyaman Rice Festival, rice was a staple food in Filipino homes. Before the introduction of advanced farming technologies and modern harvesting techniques, Filipinos cultivated rice grains solely based on generational knowledge and experience. It started slowly but steadily in 1909 when the average rice production was only 16 cavans, a Filipino unit of mass, which equates to 2,128 of rice per hectare. But as new and high-quality planting seeds were introduced, rice production increased to 24 cavans in 1919, and 28.4 in 1929. This number increased with the introduction of irrigation areas, such as concrete canals and water dams in 1946, which helped farmers cultivate more rice, and remained consistent until 1948.
